Nepal Trekking Restrictions Update

Nepal has recently opened up for tourists. But don’t get excited just yet, not all types of tourists can apply and get the visa to enter Nepal. There are still quite a few rules and regulations which make or don’t make much sense. But worst of all is the uncertainty – there are rules being advertised then they are being changed. This confusion is causing many travelers to rather not start this endeavour. This poor state of things almost looks like it’s being created on purpose. It seems like the Nepalese Government does not want foreign or even local visitors.

Restrictions to apply for Nepal Covid Visa

Here are the main points one should know about traveling to Nepal in the 2020-2021 season:

  1. Nepalese Government only wants mountaineers and trekkers to visit the country. Other types of tourists are not allowed.
  2. Visitors cannot get the visa on arrival at the Kathmandu Airport any longer. They must submit their application and get prior approval.
  3. Visitors must hire a local trekking/mountaineering and register their trekking itinerary.
  4. Visitors must get health insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment.
  5. Visitors must show a negative COVID-19 PCR coronavirus test.
  6. Visitors must stay one week (7 days) in a quarantine center in Kathmandu.
  7. Visitors must take another COVID-19 PCR coronavirus test at the end of the quarantine. If that is positive then you can go on the mountain.
  8. The guides, porters, team members of your “expedition” must all take COVID-19 PCR coronavirus tests and must prove that they have been in an area without infections.

It seems that all the countries in the world are “running short of hospital beds” – Nepal is no exception. Nepal trekking restrictions in 2020/2021 are probably just an excuse to keep their people locked in. But, of course, they want to keep the “infection numbers” low. Obviously, nobody is being paid to inflate the numbers and spread panic and fear. I would think that people that have their livelihoods destroyed are much more than people affected by this so called pandemic. But, getting back to our subject, the Nepal government is making it really difficult for tourists that want to visit this country. And it’s making it even harder for the millions depending on the trekking season to make a living.
